The body of these bags are made from 15 ounce duck canvas. The yellow shoulder straps are tubular webbing, rated in its original form to 15,000 lbs. The green webbing is surplus, with a lot of it coming from a 1966 dated roll of 79% cotton, 21% Fortisan (an extra strong rayon yarn). For comfort, the straps are padded with recycled felt, as was done on many packs of the 1960s and 1970s. The distinctive translucent overlay is a tribute to survival gear, and is made from ripstop nylon from C-9 parachute canopies. The zippers are heavy duty Crown Zippers from the 1940’s, often used in sleeping bags and tents from that time.
Each backpack is only 1 of 20 made. Some are all orange, some all white, some have a little bit of both. There’s also a few different versions of the zip, some with the two way teeth, some with the earlier chevron teeth; some with spring loaded pulls, some with paperclip style. No two are the same.
Each bag includes has a unique piece of vintage reading material inside, to hopefully give you a window into the midcentury outdoors world that this project is honoring.
